  • CDO Sunil Kumar Dhanwanta Leads ‘NIPUN Sankalp Workshop 2026’, Calls for Mission-Mode Efforts to Achieve Foundational Literacy in Bahraich

    Bahraich: Reinforcing the vision of the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 and the NIPUN Bharat Mission, the Basic Education Department organised the NIPUN Sankalp Workshop 2026 at Hariyali Resort in Bahraich. The workshop brought together education officials, academic experts and stakeholders from Bahraich, Gonda and Shravasti to strengthen efforts towards ensuring that every child achieves Foundational Literacy and Numeracy (FLN) by Class III through competency-based, child-centric and activity-based learning.

                The programme commenced with floral tributes to Goddess Saraswati and the ceremonial lighting of the lamp by Chief Development Officer (CDO) Sunil Kumar Dhanwanta, Basic Shiksha Adhikari Ashish Kumar Singh, District Inspector of Schools Sarvadanand, Assistant Director of Basic Education Ram Sagar Pati Tripathi and other dignitaries. Students welcomed the guests with Saraswati Vandana and colourful cultural performances reflecting India’s rich traditions and local heritage.

                Addressing the gathering, CDO Sunil Kumar Dhanwanta said that the NIPUN Bharat Mission is not merely an educational programme but the foundation of every child’s bright future. He stressed that coordinated efforts by the district administration and the education department would help create a high-quality learning environment in every government school, ensuring that the district achieves its goal of making every child academically proficient within the stipulated timeline.

    “The success of the mission depends on our collective commitment. Every child deserves access to quality education, and every school must become a centre of joyful and effective learning,” Dhanwanta said, urging officials and teachers to work in mission mode.

    District Basic Education Officer Ashish Kumar Singh described proficiency as a shared responsibility rather than merely a departmental target. He urged Block Education Officers (BEOs), State Resource Group (SRG) members, Academic Resource Persons (ARPs) and teachers to strengthen academic support, classroom mentoring, regular monitoring and innovative teaching practices across schools.

                District Inspector of Schools Sarvadanand said that a strong foundation in elementary education is essential for strengthening the entire education system. He called for greater coordination among educational institutions to improve learning outcomes.

                Assistant Director of Basic Education Ram Sagar Pati Tripathi emphasised the importance of effective monitoring, innovation and a results-oriented work culture to achieve the objectives of the NIPUN Bharat Mission. He appealed to all officials and teachers to pursue the mission with dedication and accountability.

    Principals of District Institutes of Education and Training (DIETs) highlighted continuous professional development, teacher capacity building, competency-based pedagogy and effective assessment as the pillars of the mission’s success. They assured participants of sustained academic guidance and institutional support.

                During the technical sessions organised by the NIPUN Cell of the State Project Office, subject experts made detailed presentations on the latest strategies under the NIPUN Bharat Mission, competency-based learning, FLN indicators, academic assessment, effective use of Teaching Learning Materials (TLMs), school monitoring and data-driven planning. Participants interacted with experts, clarified their queries and shared best practices from their respective districts.

                Experts said the workshop aimed to prepare a common roadmap for ensuring every child becomes proficient by Class III, promote child-centred and activity-based learning, strengthen the academic role of all stakeholders, encourage innovation, facilitate the exchange of best practices and improve learning outcomes through continuous assessment, monitoring and academic support.

                BEOs, SRG members and ARPs presented successful initiatives and innovative practices implemented in their respective blocks while discussing local challenges and practical solutions. They reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening classroom observation, academic mentoring and competency-based teaching at the school level.

                The workshop concluded with all participants taking a collective pledge to work with complete dedication and accountability to ensure that every child in the district acquires foundational literacy and numeracy skills in line with the objectives of the NIPUN Bharat Mission.

                The event was attended by District Basic Education Officers from Bahraich, Gonda and Shravasti, DIET principals, District Inspector of Schools, Block Education Officers, State Resource Group members, Academic Resource Persons and experts from the NIPUN Cell of the State Project Office. Organisers expressed confidence that the deliberations and recommendations emerging from the workshop would provide fresh momentum to the implementation of the NIPUN Bharat Mission across the participating districts.

  • Enumerators, Supervisors Honored for Outstanding Work in Census 2027 Phase-I in Bahraich

    Bahraich, May 29: Enumerators and supervisors who demonstrated exceptional performance during Phase-I of Census 2027—‘House Listing and House Enumeration’ (HLB)—were honored in Bahraich district for completing their assigned work with dedication, accuracy, and efficiency. Officials informed that nearly 200 enumerators who achieved 100 percent completion of house enumeration work are being recognized for their contribution.

    Additional District Magistrate and District Census Officer Amit Kumar honored Jyoti Gaur, Assistant Teacher at Primary School Badgaon-I under Risia Development Block in Nanpara Tehsil, and Seema Pal, Assistant Teacher at Primary School Padritara, at his office in the Collectorate for completing the HLB work ahead of schedule. He stated that other enumerators who have shown exemplary performance would also be honored at the tehsil level.

    ADM Kumar said that a total of 6,233 enumerators have been deployed across the district for Census 2027 operations. Out of them, 200 enumerators have successfully completed the House Listing and House Enumeration work in their respective areas. He appealed to residents to cooperate fully with census officials and employees, emphasizing that the census forms the foundation for planning and implementing development schemes. He also assured that the entire census process is secure and all information collected remains strictly confidential.

    Naib Tehsildar Nanpara Shailesh Awasthi stated that under Phase-I of Census 2027, initiated by the Government of India in 2026, enumerators and supervisors who carried out their responsibilities with dedication, responsibility, and accuracy were honored with Certificates of Appreciation after successfully completing enumeration of all houses in their assigned HLB areas.

    The honors were presented by Amita Yadav, Deputy District Census Officer and SDM Nanpara; Shailesh Kumar, Charge Officer and Tehsildar Nanpara; and Arun Kumar Verma, Deputy Charge Officer, Balha. Officials said that sincerity, punctuality, and accuracy are essential in a significant national exercise like the census, and that employees delivering outstanding performance inspire others.

    Among those honored were Baby Malik, Ruchi Chaudhary, Aman Kumar, Shashima Kushwaha, Amit Badola, Jyoti Verma, Chandan Yadav, Atul Singh, Neelima Srivastava, and Archana Shakya, along with several other enumerators and supervisors.

  • CDO Sunil Kumar Dhanwanta Chairs Farmers’ Day Programme in Bahraich

    Bahraich, May 29: A district-level ‘Kisan Diwas’ (Farmers’ Day) programme was organized at the Vikas Bhawan auditorium on Thursday under the chairmanship of Chief Development Officer (CDO) Sunil Kumar Dhanwanta. During the meeting, farmers raised several issues related to crop procurement, pending payments, seeds, and agriculture-related services.

    Addressing officials from the Agriculture and Allied Departments, the CDO directed them to ensure the prompt and quality resolution of all grievances received during the programme. He encouraged farmers to adopt natural farming practices to increase their income and reduce dependence on chemical fertilizers. Assuring farmers of administrative support, he said any farmer could directly approach his office with complaints, which would be resolved on priority.

    During the meeting, progressive farmers Hari Sharan Singh and Lalata Prasad Gupta demanded the establishment of maize procurement centres in Bahraich district, stating that maize production had been exceptionally high during the recent Rabi season.Farmers’ Raise Maize Procurement, Wheat Payment Issues at Kisan Diwas in Bahraich

    Farmer Anil Kumar Mishra from Nawabganj complained that despite selling his wheat crop over a month ago, he had not yet received payment for the produce. Another farmer, Lalata Prasad Gupta, sought clarification from Forest Department officials regarding tree felling regulations.

    Responding to the query, the Forest Department representative informed the gathering that 26 species of trees, including mango trees, have been placed under the restricted category and cannot be cut without prior permission. However, farmers or individuals requiring the felling of such trees may obtain permission from the Forest Department through the prescribed process.

    Dr. C.P.N. Gautam, Senior Scientist and Head of Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK), advised farmers to carefully select quality seeds to ensure better crop productivity during the upcoming Kharif season. KVK scientist Dr. Nandan Singh urged farmers to reduce excessive use of DAP and Urea fertilizers, warning that overuse of chemical fertilizers is adversely affecting soil fertility.

    Deputy Director of Agriculture Vinay Kumar Verma informed the gathering that a Millet Processing Unit would soon be established in Bahraich district. He said the facility would greatly benefit local millet growers by enabling easy processing of their produce within the district itself.

    He also appealed to farmers to get their Farmer Registries prepared at the earliest, stating that the government is giving top priority to the registry process. Farmers were also requested to motivate fellow farmers to complete their registrations.

    District Agriculture Officer Subedar Yadav informed farmers that those interested in obtaining mini-kits of millets and other seeds should register through the ‘Darshan-1’ portal. He further stated that Dhaincha (Sesbania) seeds and other Kharif season seeds are available at government agricultural seed stores across the district at a 50 percent subsidy.

    He added that the government has ensured the timely supply of Dhaincha seeds this season so that farmers can easily avail themselves of the subsidized seeds for green manuring and soil improvement purposes.

    समिति में शामिल किए गए श्यामकरन टेकड़ीवाल लंबे समय से भाजपा संगठन, शिक्षा और सामाजिक गतिविधियों से जुड़े रहे हैं। वे बहराइच के महाराज सिंह इंटर कॉलेज तथा महिला महाविद्यालय के प्रबंधक भी हैं। उनकी पत्नी सुधा टेकड़ीवाल वर्तमान में नगर पालिका परिषद की चेयरमैन हैं। जिले में श्यामकरन टेकड़ीवाल की पहचान एक सक्रिय शिक्षाविद, कुशल राजनेता और समाजसेवी के रूप में है।

    वहीं, सदस्य बनाए गए मनीष मल्होत्रा देश की प्रतिष्ठित समाचार एजेंसी पीटीआई के बहराइच एवं श्रावस्ती संवाददाता हैं। इसके अलावा वे डिस्ट्रिक्ट ओलम्पिक एसोसिएशन बहराइच के अध्यक्ष, उद्योग व्यापार मंडल के वरिष्ठ जिला उपाध्यक्ष तथा कई सामाजिक संगठनों से जुड़े हुए हैं। पत्रकारिता और सामाजिक क्षेत्र में उनकी सक्रिय भूमिका को देखते हुए उन्हें समिति में स्थान दिया गया है।

    समिति के संयोजक के रूप में बलरामपुर के शिक्षाविद एवं वरिष्ठ पत्रकार सर्वेश सिंह को जिम्मेदारी सौंपी गई है। इसके अतिरिक्त बलरामपुर के शिक्षाविद आशुतोष शुक्ला व सचिन कुमार सिंह, गोंडा के वरिष्ठ पत्रकार जानकी शरण द्विवेदी, समाजसेवी रामकृष्ण तिवारी, शिक्षाविद डॉ. अमय श्रीवास्तव, श्रावस्ती से पत्रकार पंकज मिश्रा व शिव कुमार पाठक तथा जगजीत इंटर कॉलेज के प्राचार्य राम बिहारी बाजपेई को भी समिति का सदस्य बनाया गया है।

  • Bahraich Embraces Digital Learning as “The Teacher App” Gets Grand Launch

    Marking a major push towards modern and technology-enabled education, “The Teacher App,” an innovative initiative developed jointly by the Bharti Airtel Foundation and NITI Aayog, was launched in Bahraich during a special ceremony organized at the Vikas Bhawan auditorium. The app was formally inaugurated by Chief Development Officer (CDO) Sunil Kumar Dhanwanta and District Basic Education Officer (BSA) Ashish Kumar Singh in the presence of senior education officials, Block Education Officers, SRGs, ARPs, principals, and teachers from different parts of the district.

    Speaking at the event, CDO Sunil Kumar Dhanwanta highlighted the growing importance of digital tools in transforming the education system and ensuring better learning standards. He said the newly launched application should not remain limited to providing teaching material alone, but should become a dynamic platform that connects classroom teaching, innovative educational practices, and continuous monitoring of students’ academic progress.

    Encouraging active participation from educators, the CDO urged teachers to use the platform for sharing successful teaching methods, creative classroom activities, and innovative ideas so that a healthy culture of learning, collaboration, and academic excellence could be promoted across the district. He noted that such digital initiatives would not only strengthen teachers professionally but would also contribute significantly to improving educational outcomes among students.

    During the programme, the “Saksharta Bharti Abhiyan” booklet was also unveiled jointly by the CDO, BSA, and the State Project Coordinator of the Bharti Airtel Foundation. Officials described the booklet as an important tool for promoting literacy awareness and community participation in education. Under the initiative, schoolchildren will encourage literacy among their family members and communities during the summer vacation, helping spread educational awareness at the grassroots level.

    Addressing the gathering, BSA Ashish Kumar Singh said the inclusion of provisions related to the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 and the National Curriculum Framework (NCF) 2023 makes the application highly progressive and relevant to present educational needs. He stated that the app would not only enhance teachers’ technical capabilities but would also help improve classroom teaching standards and students’ learning achievements in government schools.

    Block Education Officer Anurag Kumar Mishra informed that “The Teacher App” will be available free of cost for all teachers and can be accessed through Android, iOS, and web platforms, making it easy to use on smartphones, tablets, and computers alike. Available in both Hindi and English, the app offers several modern features including digital lesson planning, e-content and video-based study material, subject-wise question banks, practice resources, online training modules, educational content-sharing facilities, and AI-powered academic assistance.

    He further stated that the platform would also encourage collaborative learning and innovative teaching practices among educators. The programme was attended by Bharti Airtel Foundation State Project Coordinator Brajesh Bhardwaj along with foundation teams from Bahraich, Shravasti, and Lucknow.

    ➡️ इसे लखनऊ की तरह पूरे प्रदेश में अक्षय पात्र योजना या किसी अन्य एजेंसी के माध्यम से संचालित कराया जाए।
    ➡️ या फिर इसे पूरी तरह ग्राम प्रधानों को सौंप दिया जाए।

    ⚡ विद्यालयों के ऊपर से हाई टेंशन तार हटाए जाएं

    जनपद स्तर पर चयन वेतनमान और अन्य समस्याओं के समाधान के लिए सर्वसम्मति से निर्णय लिया गया कि जल्द ही एक प्रतिनिधिमंडल जिला बेसिक शिक्षा अधिकारी से मिलकर समस्याओं के निराकरण की मांग करेगा।

    संगठन के जिला निर्वाचन को लेकर भी बैठक में प्रस्ताव रखा गया। निर्णय लिया गया कि 15 मार्च तक सभी विकासखंड सदस्यता के अनुसार डेलीगेट सूची जनपद को उपलब्ध करा देंगे।

    10 सूत्रीय मांग पत्र सौंपा – समस्याओं का तुरंत समाधान करो! ⚡

    उत्तर प्रदेशीय जूनियर हाईस्कूल शिक्षक संघ ने जिला बेसिक शिक्षा अधिकारी को एक 10 सूत्रीय मांग पत्र सौंपा है। शिक्षक भाई-बहनों की लंबे समय से लंबित समस्याओं पर अब गंभीर कार्रवाई की मांग की गई है! संघ के जिलाध्यक्ष विद्या विलास पाठक ने कहा कि विभाग द्वारा शिक्षकों से महीनों से लगातार गैर-शैक्षिक कार्य लिए जा रहे हैं। 16 मार्च से बेसिक शिक्षा परिषद की परीक्षाएं प्रारंभ हो रही हैं, लेकिन शिक्षकों को बीएलओ, सुपरवाइजर, स्टेटिक मजिस्ट्रेट, कक्ष निरीक्षक, एसआईआर एवं विभिन्न प्रशिक्षण कार्यक्रमों में लगाया जा चुका है। इससे छात्र पढ़ाई से वंचित हो रहे हैं और शिक्षकों में रोष तथा मानसिक तनाव की स्थिति उत्पन्न हो रही है।

    उन्होंने कहा कि शिक्षकों से उनका मूल कार्य छीनकर अन्य कार्य कराए जा रहे हैं, जो शिक्षा व्यवस्था के हित में नहीं है। मार्च के प्रथम सप्ताह में जिला संयुक्त समिति की बैठक आयोजित कर आगे की रणनीति तैयार की जाएगी। यदि समस्याओं का समाधान नहीं हुआ तो शिक्षक आंदोलन करने के लिए बाध्य होंगे।

    Bahraich, February 10 — The annual sports festival at Kisan Post Graduate College turned into a vibrant celebration of talent, discipline, and youthful energy on Tuesday, with students captivating the audience through spectacular displays of Taekwondo, Yoga, and a traditional Saraswati Vandana.

    The event was inaugurated jointly by BJP District President Brijesh Pandey, College Management Committee Secretary Major Dr. S.P. Singh, Management Committee Member and Provincial Athlete Ajit Pratap Singh (also Block Pramukh of Huzoorpur), and Principal Professor Vinay Saxena.

    The programme commenced with a soulful Saraswati Vandana, setting a reverent tone. This was followed by breathtaking performances in Yoga and Taekwondo, where students demonstrated remarkable flexibility, strength, precision, and awe-inspiring stunts that left spectators spellbound.

    Athletic events took centre stage next, featuring spirited races in the 100m, 200m, 400m, and 1600m categories. The track witnessed enthusiastic participation from the youth, showcasing speed, stamina, and competitive spirit.

    Sports In-charge Pankaj Singh informed that a total of 345 students actively participated in the competitions.

    Addressing the gathering, BJP District President Brijesh Pandey, an alumnus of the college, shared nostalgic memories. “Watching the young students run on the track today reminded me of my own student days here,” he said, expressing pride in the institution’s continued focus on holistic development.

    Ajit Pratap Singh, a member of the management committee, emphasised that such sports festivals play a crucial role in polishing the hidden sporting talents among students. Major Dr. S.P.   • कब्रिस्तान मार्ग निर्माण न होने पर सभासद प्रतिनिधि ने आंदोलन की चेतावनी

    कब्रिस्तान को जाने वाली सड़क का निर्माण लंबे समय से न होने को लेकर वार्ड संख्या 17, मोहल्ला तोपखाना मिरयासी टोला, नानपारा के नागरिकों में भारी रोष व्याप्त है। इस मुद्दे पर सभासद प्रतिनिधि समीउल्लाह खान उर्फ शुएब ने नागरिकों के साथ सड़क पर धरना-प्रदर्शन करने की चेतावनी दी है।

    इस संबंध में सभासद सामिया खान के आवास पर एक बैठक आयोजित की गई, जिसमें मोहल्लेवासियों ने बताया कि एक वर्ष से अधिक समय बीत जाने के बावजूद कब्रिस्तान को जाने वाली सड़क का निर्माण नहीं किया गया है। जबकि पूर्व में इस मार्ग को बनाने के लिए इंटरलॉकिंग सड़क को उखाड़ दिया गया था। इसके बाद सड़क निर्माण न होने से आम जनमानस को गंभीर परेशानियों का सामना करना पड़ रहा है।

    सभासद प्रतिनिधि शोएब खान ने कहा कि पंडित दीनदयाल उपाध्याय योजना के अंतर्गत नानपारा नगर में कई सड़कों का डामरीकरण किया जाना था, जिनमें ईदगाह रोड और कवि नगर रोड का निर्माण पूरा हो चुका है, लेकिन सबसे महत्वपूर्ण कब्रिस्तान मार्ग को अब तक नजरअंदाज किया जा रहा है। उन्होंने बताया कि एक वर्ष पूर्व इस सड़क पर लगी इंटरलॉकिंग हटाकर केवल बालू और मिट्टी डाल दी गई, जिससे आने-जाने वालों, विशेषकर मैयत ले जाने में अत्यधिक कठिनाइयों का सामना करना पड़ता है।

    मोहल्लेवासियों का कहना है कि योजना के तहत लगभग सभी रास्तों का निर्माण कर दिया गया, लेकिन केवल कब्रिस्तान मार्ग को छोड़ दिया गया, जिससे नगर पालिका की कार्यप्रणाली पर सवाल खड़े हो रहे हैं। यदि शीघ्र ही सड़क का निर्माण नहीं कराया गया तो मोहल्लेवासी विशाल धरना-प्रदर्शन करने को मजबूर होंगे।

                   Speaking at a meeting organized by the Shramjivi Patrkar Union at the LRP Guest House near Police Lines on Sunday, the DM emphasized the media’s dual role. He acknowledged that the administration welcomes constructive criticism through reporting, as it exposes systemic gaps and enables timely corrective action. “Such coverage is essential for improvement,” he noted, underlining how honest reporting helps strengthen governance.

                   However, Tripathi cautioned against the growing trend of sensationalizing headlines solely to garner attention of the viewers/readers. He appealed to journalists to resist such practices and commit to ethical journalism that serves the broader public interest rather than short-term gains.

                   The event also marked a significant moment for the Shramjivi Patrkar Union, Bahraich, as Union’s incumbent president Sanjay Mishra was unanimously re-elected for an unprecedented fifth consecutive term.     बौंडी ग्राम पंचायत में कथित भ्रष्टाचार और सरकारी धन के दुरुपयोग का मामला सामने आया है। ग्राम बौंडी निवासी एवं टीवी इंडियन न्यूज/अभी तक सुपर फास्ट हिंदी दैनिक समाचार पत्र के संपादक प्रमोद ठठेर ने इस संबंध में उत्तर प्रदेश लोकायुक्त कार्यालय में औपचारिक शिकायत दर्ज कराई है। शिकायत में आवास योजना, हैंडपंप मरम्मत एवं रिबोर, समर्सिबल, राज्य वित्त सहित अन्य विकास कार्यों में गंभीर वित्तीय अनियमितताओं का आरोप लगाया गया है।

    बहराइच, 22 जनवरी — जिला बेसिक शिक्षा अधिकारी आशीष कुमार सिंह ने बताया कि निःशुल्क एवं अनिवार्य बाल शिक्षा का अधिकार अधिनियम (आरटीई) 2009 के तहत अलाभित एवं दुर्बल वर्ग के बच्चों को गैर-सहायता प्राप्त मान्यता प्राप्त निजी स्कूलों में कक्षा 1 तथा पूर्व-प्राथमिक कक्षाओं (नर्सरी, एलकेजी, यूकेजी) में 25 प्रतिशत सीटें आरक्षित रखी गई हैं। उत्तर प्रदेश सरकार ने शैक्षिक सत्र 2026-27 के लिए प्रवेश की समय-सारिणी जारी कर दी है।

    प्रवेश प्रक्रिया पूरी तरह ऑनलाइन होगी और लॉटरी प्रणाली के माध्यम से पारदर्शी तरीके से चयन किया जाएगा। आवेदन आरटीई पोर्टल rte25.upsdc.gov.in पर किए जाएंगे।

                In a move aimed at nurturing reading habits and enhancing awareness of current affairs among students, the Uttar Pradesh government has made daily newspaper reading mandatory in all government-run schools across the state.

                Acting on the directive, Basic Shiksha Adhikari (BSA) of Bahraich, Ashish Kumar Singh, has instructed all Block Education Officers (BEOs) to ensure strict compliance with the order at the ground level. Under the initiative, students of the Basic Education Department will now read Hindi and English newspapers every day after the morning assembly.

                The directive was issued by Director General of School Education Monica Rani to all Basic Education Officers, mandating uniform implementation in government primary and secondary schools. Following the winter vacation, which ended on January 14, 2026, all school heads in the district have been directed to implement the order without delay.

                Speaking on the initiative, BSA Ashish Kumar Singh said the programme is designed to strengthen students’ reading ability, improve language skills, promote critical thinking, and enhance general knowledge. He added that encouraging newspaper reading would also help reduce excessive screen time among children by fostering healthy reading habits.

                Providing further details, Chittaura Block Education Officer Anurag Kumar Mishra said teachers have been instructed to purchase reputed Hindi and English newspapers using the composite grant fund available to schools. Teachers have also been asked to encourage students to read newspapers not only after the morning assembly but also during recess or free periods.

                According to official sources, the initiative is based on a government order issued on December 23, 2025, by Additional Chief Secretary (Secondary and Basic Education) Parth Sarathi Sen Sharma. The order mandates that at least 10 minutes every day be earmarked exclusively for newspaper reading during the morning assembly in all government schools.

                As per the guidelines, schools must make reputed Hindi and English newspapers available in their libraries. During the designated reading time, students will take turns reading important national, international, and sports news, along with selected editorials. Teachers will also encourage students to identify difficult words as the “Word of the Day,” which will be displayed on school notice boards to help build vocabulary. Younger students will be motivated to prepare scrapbooks using newspaper clippings.

                While the formal order was issued by the Additional Chief Secretary, its statewide implementation is being monitored by Director General of School Education Monica Rani. The government has also made provisions for newspapers to be supplied at government expense, and compliance has been made mandatory for all government schools.

                Education experts have welcomed the initiative, describing it as a positive step towards reviving the reading culture in schools and making students more informed and aware of the world around them.

  • Wildlife lovers slam Forest Department for sending healthy rescued tiger to zoo

                A decision of the Forest Department to shift a healthy rescued tiger to Gorakhpur Zoo instead of releasing it back into the wild has drawn sharp criticism from wildlife lovers and experts, who have termed the move unfair and against conservation principles.

                After a three-day rescue operation, the adult tiger that strayed into Rehuwa Mansoor village under Ramgaon police station in Mahsi tehsil was successfully tranquilized on Saturday evening by a team of forest personnel, veterinarians and trained elephants from Dudhwa Tiger Reserve (DTR). The tiger was brought to the Divisional Forest office, where a medical examination confirmed that it was completely healthy, with intact canines and claws and capable of hunting.

                Despite this, the tiger was sent to Gorakhpur Zoo on Sunday following orders from Principal Chief Conservator of Forests & Chief Wildlife Warden of Uttar Pradesh Anuradha Vemuri. Vemuri said the rescued big cat was a ‘Sugarcane Tiger’ so it was being sent to Gorakhpur zoo. (A “sugarcane tiger” is a term commonly used for a wild tiger that strays out of forest areas and takes shelter in sugarcane fields near villages or farmlands). A forest range officer in Bahraich also confirmed that the tiger was being shifted to Gorakhpur zoo on the orders of higher authorities.

                The decision has triggered strong resentment among wildlife enthusiasts and conservation experts. Former wildlife warden Allahabad (now Prayagraj) V.K. Singh said that since the tiger had neither attacked nor injured anyone and was fit to survive in the wild, it should have been released back into its natural habitat in Katarniaghat or Dudhwa National Park. He noted that tigers frequently stray into dense bushes or sugarcane fields, mistaking them for grassland extensions of their territory.

                Former Katarniaghat DFO Gyan Prakash Singh highlighted that a healthy tiger plays a vital role in sustaining wild populations and plays a crucial role in maintaining ecological balance. He and stressed the need of thorough assessment for relocation decision. Singh suggested the tiger likely sneaked from the Motipur range of Katarniaghat Wildlife Sanctuary.

                Veterinarian Dr. Deepak Verma, who examined the tiger, confirmed that it was a fully grown and fit adult with intact canines and claws, capable of hunting effectively. He said the animal had recently hunted and dragged a bull weighing around 4 to 5 quintals, which clearly proved its strength and hunting ability.

                Bhagwan Das Lakhmani, president of the Katarniaghat Friends Club, called the department’s decision unfortunate and wrong. He said that the tiger had not caused any incident. He said that tigers and other wild animals often wander into sugarcane fields or dense bushes during fog, mistaking them for forest areas, and this alone is no ground to confine them in a zoo. Lakhmani termed the move as injustice with the big cat.

                Wildlife groups have now demanded a review of the decision and urged authorities to prioritize rehabilitation of healthy wild animals in their natural habitat instead of confining them to zoos. A senior forest officer also termed the decision against the guidelines of the National Tiger Conservation Authority (NTCA)

                Under India’s wildlife management protocols (guided by the NTCA), healthy straying tigers without conflict history are typically evaluated for safe release into suitable habitats to maintain genetic diversity and ecological balance. Critics argue this case met those criteria, making zoo confinement unnecessary.

                In a dramatic bust that underscores the vulnerabilities at India’s porous borders and the allure of cross-border vices; five young men from Lucknow were arrested yesterday for impersonating high-ranking officials while attempting to sneak into Nepal for a night of gambling. Equipped with a souped-up Toyota Innova Crysta flashing red and blue lights like a government VIP convoy, the group claimed elite statuses—including one posing as a Principal Secretary in the state secretariat—to evade scrutiny. But their ruse crumbled under questioning, leading to the seizure of cash, gadgets, and a swift handover to local police.

                The incident unfolded on the evening of January 11 at the bustling Rupaidiha check-post, a key gateway along the Indo-Nepal border in Bahraich district. Recently Foreign nationals, including Chinese citizen attempting illegal entry, have also been apprehended here, raising concerns about border security.

                According to Ganga Singh Udawat, Commandant of the 42nd Battalion of the Sashastra Seema Bal (SSB) a joint team of SSB jawans and local police flagged down the suspicious vehicle during routine checks. “The Innova bearing logo of UP Government arrived blaring a siren, with red and blue lights flashing, mimicking an official escort,” Udawat recounted. “One occupant boldly identified himself as an IAS officer, while another claimed to be the son of a police inspector. Their stories didn’t add up during intensive interrogation.”

                The vehicle in question, a sleek Toyota Innova Crysta, had been modified with unauthorized emergency lights and a siren—equipment typically reserved for law enforcement or high officials—to intimidate and bypass authorities. Such modifications are illegal under Indian traffic laws.

                The five arrested individuals were identified as Dharmendra Singh son of Ambar Singh, Shubham Bajpai, Anmol Yadav (alias Ranjit Yadav), Sachin Singh, and Swapnil Sahay. They were handed over to Rupaideha police on Monday. Under pressure, they confessed their true intent: a cross-border jaunt to Nepalganj, a Nepali town just across the border known for its thriving casino scene. Nepalganj’s casinos draw thousands of Indian tourists annually, lured by legal gambling that’s banned in most parts of India. This “gambling tourism” has boomed, with Indians crossing over for high-stakes games

                Police Circle Officer Nanpara, Pahup Singh, elaborated on the arrests: “The group admitted to installing the lights and siren to dodge police en route. We recovered 6 mobile phones, a chip device—likely for casino gaming—a power bank, and a substantial ₹2,17,480 in cash.

                Adding a layer of concern, two of the accused have prior criminal records. Dharmendra Singh, who posed as the IAS Principal Secretary, faces charges at Lucknow’s PGI and Sushant Golf City police stations for gambling offenses. Anmol Yadav has a case pending at Sushant Golf City as well. “These aren’t first-timers,” noted Rupaiyadiha Police Station in-charge Ramesh Rawat.

                An FIR (No. 007/2026) has been lodged at Rupaiyadiha Police Station under Section 319(2) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), which deals with cheating by personation. After preliminary proceedings, the quintet was presented before the Bahraich district court and remanded to judicial custody.
